Enhancing Telecom Network Resilience in Ecuador with Sierra Solutions

Case study • 31.03 2025

In regions facing frequent power disruptions, ensuring continuous telecommunications services is a critical challenge. In Ecuador, prolonged droughts have limited hydropower generation, leading to regular electricity cuts. To maintain network operations, Sertelinte, our trusted partner, has integrated our Sierra modular power converters into data transmission racks for a major telecom operator in Ecuador.

The requirement was clear: deploy a robust energy backup system that could support both AC and DC loads, manage battery storage efficiently, and ensure seamless monitoring and control.

Key Challenges

  • Frequent power outages causing disruptions in telecommunications services.
  • Necessity to support both AC and DC loads and be able to charge and discharge batteries.
  • Efficient oversight and control of the backup systems
  • Need of a compact solution that fits into existing or new data transmission racks.

The solution: Sierra modular power converters

To overcome these challenges, Sertelinte deployed the Sierra 10 and Sierra 25 modular power converters within data transmission racks, equipped with Li-Ion batteries and other essential telecom equipment.

Key features and advantages of Sierra:

  • All-in-one design: the Sierra series AC and DC loads, battery charge/discharge management, and power backup in a single unit, reducing complexity and space requirements.
  • Multi-directional power conversion: the Sierra converters efficiently handle power in multiple directions, adapting to the dynamic requirements of modern telecommunications infrastructure.
  • High efficiency: Sierra converters achieve up to 96% conversion efficiency, minimizing energy loss and optimizing operational costs.
  • 0ms transfer time: ensures an uninterrupted switch from grid to battery power during outages, guaranteeing continuous operation of cellular network services.
  • Integrated monitoring with Inview: Enables efficient and straightforward monitoring of converter performance.
  • Hot-swappable power converters: simplifies maintenance, allowing module replacement without system downtime.
  • Scalability and flexibility: the modular design supports parallel configurations, eliminating the need for master/slave hierarchies and allowing future system expansion.

Implementation and Deployment

The solution underwent initial testing, which successfully demonstrated its reliability and efficiency. Following positive feedback from Sertelinte and the telecom operator, field deployments began, with plans for further installations as network demands evolve. The systems were integrated into data transmission racks alongside Li-Ion batteries and other essential telecom equipment, ensuring a compact and efficient energy backup solution. The Inview monitoring system was also configured to provide clear oversight of the power systems’ performance.

« Working alongside Sertelinte on this project has been an incredible opportunity. Their positive feedback confirms Sierra’s commitment to delivering reliable, scalable solutions that meet the demanding needs of the telecommunications sector. Together we look to optimise the better channel to import material in shorter time due the emergency » says Felipe, Sales Representative at CE+T Power.

Results and Impact

  • Enhanced reliability: the solution ensured service continuity during power outages, strengthening the resilience of telecommunications operations.
  • Operational efficiency: high conversion efficiency led to reduced energy consumption and lower operational costs.
  • Simplified maintenance: the modular design and integrated monitoring streamlined maintenance and reduced potential downtime.
  • Future-ready infrastructure: the scalable nature of the system ensures readiness for future network expansions.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

The integration of Sierra modular power converters has significantly enhanced the resilience of telecommunications infrastructure in Ecuador. Sertelinte’s confidence in the solution, demonstrated through initial testing and subsequent field deployments, confirms the Sierra series’ value in ensuring reliable, efficient, and scalable energy backup.

« The installed backup power systems are functioning properly and have proven to be the ideal solution for space in telecommunications racks. The fact that they can be monitored 24/7 adds a plus for the client, allowing them to supervise the system through their platform. » says Guido Alban from Sertelinte.

Looking forward, Sertelinte plans to continue expanding its network infrastructure with additional Sierra systems, ensuring long-term service reliability and operational efficiency.
