Australia is no stranger to natural disasters, and mobile phone coverage is one of the things that regularly goes out when bushfires and cyclones hit the country.
In response, there has been an exciting development in the state of Victoria, where remote telecommunications towers powered by 10kw Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generators are now up and running. The Energys Australia generators have CE+T multi-directional converters inside and will provide a critical backup whenever outages disable the telco towers. The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generators have been commissioned at five sites operated by Australian telecommunications company Telstra. The sites were chosen due to their particular vulnerability to electricity grid storm damage.
CE+T Australia’s Ian Rowlands said seeing the generators come on stream shows the versatility of CE+T’s Sierra range.
“Hydrogen Fuel Cells have an interesting voltage / power relationship that required some clever engineering to achieve the optimum load vs power relationship between the variability of Fuel Cell output to the 380Vdc internal DC bus. The CE+T software team rose to the challenge to adjust the curve of the voltage / power response of the IRIS DC/DC converters to meet the Fuel Cell requirements ”
